KYIV — In a bold display of growing drone warfare capabilities, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has carried out a deep-strike operation that reportedly destroyed or damaged more than 40 Russian military aircraft in a single night, Ukrainian security sources told the Kyiv Post.
Codenamed “Web,” the covert mission targeted four major Russian airbases—Belaya, Diaghilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo—hitting strategic bombers including Tu-95s, Tu-22M3s, and even an A-50 early warning aircraft.
"This is a turning point," one SBU source said. “Our drones are now reaching far into the enemy’s rear, where the planes that drop bombs on our civilians take off. Their impunity is over.”
Video footage obtained by Kyiv Post appears to show blazing fires and multiple explosions across airfields, including a clip from Belaya airbase where a voice, allegedly SBU Chief Lt. Gen. Vasyl Maliuk, celebrates the strike as successful “bavovna” — a slang term for blasts on Russian-occupied ground.
The operation, reportedly months in the making and personally overseen by Maliuk, inflicted over $2.2 billion in losses to Russia’s strategic aviation, according to preliminary Ukrainian internal assessments.
Though the Russian Defense Ministry has not commented, Ukrainian sources suggest the scale of destruction may grow as damage assessments continue.
This marks one of the most ambitious drone operations conducted by Ukraine to date, underscoring the SBU’s evolution from intelligence gathering to offensive capability. The strike also delivers a stark warning to Moscow: Ukrainian reach now extends deep into Russia’s military heartland.
