Denji Sentai Megaranger Mega Sniper 電磁戦隊メガレンジャー メガスナイパー

January 2016 is the five year anniversary of my blog. To celebrate the milestone, I will be posting four new posts in the month of January rather than my usual two. Head over now to check out my second post--my Top 7 list of BEST Sentai Mecha Designs: http://cclemon99.blogspot.com/2016/01/top-seven-best-sentai-mecha-designs.html

Welcome to my review of the Mega Sniper [メガスナイパー] from Denji Sentai Megaranger [電磁戦隊メガレンジャー]!

As you saw in my review of the Turbo Laser last time, the two piece sidearm was nothing new by the time Megaranger rolled around. Some were done better than others, and the Mega Sniper certainly has a lot of promise. On the other hand, I feel like casual fans of Super Sentai would have a hard time remembering what it looks like without a photographic reminder. So what would you say--forgettable or fantastic?

The Mega Sniper set comes with belt, buckle, holster, and badge. The Mega Sniper itself is made of two pieces. The larger piece is the Mega Magnum while the smaller piece is the Mega Shot. As all of the electronic features are on the Magnum half, the Mega Shot has to make do with a spring loaded muzzle when you pull the trigger.

Despite this being a mid/late 90s toy, it is very well put together and still works perfectly. The Magnum still makes it's strange phone-ringing sound effect with lights. Pretty much every feature/movement works as well as it did back when it was new despite this being a somewhat used toy. The biggest plus has to be it's attachment to the Multiweapons (I'll get to that...) and the Drill Saber (Yup, I'll get to that one too...). On it's own it's still a neat toy that is part of one of the last big boxed sidearm sets.

One of it's advantages is also it's biggest drawbacks. This thing is tiny. The most attractive thing about sidearm sets is that they're usually very close to scale if not exact. Due to it's combination with the Multiweapons/Drill Saber, this thing had to be small. There was no way they were going to go all out and make this thing to scale as they would have to do the same with the attachments. Even the smallest child's hand couldn't hold the Mega Shot as intended. Really, this is where all of the points came off for me. OK, maybe the light/sound was also weak...but the size thing is a killer.

I'm not entirely sure I can recommend this one for a few reasons. It's a pricey one for starters. There is a lot that can go wrong (lots of chrome to get worn out, lots of stickers to be missing/worn, electronics could be bad, it could be missing a piece). If by some miracle you manage to find one complete for a reasonableish price...go for it, I guess. I really want to like this one, but there is just so much working against it.
