Ukraine’s large-scale drone attacks targeting four airfields in Russia has alarmed pro-Kremlin media and sent shockwaves across the Russian society. Disillusioned Pro-Russian war bloggers and civilians are demanding response to the air strikes that destroyed 41 aircraft across Russia in the largest-scale Ukrainian attack on Sunday. Angry citizens have taken to social media platforms, calling for revenge and complete destruction of the Security Service of Ukraine, SBU, which carried out the special operation codenamed Spiderweb that targeted four Russian airfields: Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo on Sunday, inflicting Russia damage worth $7 billion. Netizens have called for punishment of “Kremlin cowards” in online forums. The anger expressed in social media is the reflection of the desperation and hopelessness among the Russian society.
Among the emotionally charged responses in the Russian social media are sentiments of confusion – not only because of the attack itself, but over the Russian officials’ silence following the strike. “Will our state finally protect us? They’re blowing up bridges used by civilian trains. The Kremlin was brought to its knees in front of the whole world yesterday. They took out the strategic bombers beautifully. We can’t even produce them anymore – the loss is critical. And we haven’t even issued a comment. Just silence,” one of the netizens wrote. In some social media platforms, the tone shifted form desperation to anger, with some users denying Ukraine’s military success and demanding revenge. “Tell the head of the SBU to mentally prepare — soon the ‘Ukrops’ will be hiding in subways, using plastic bags for toilets,” another angry netizen commented. “Wiping out the SBU should be the Russian Aerospace Forces’ top mission now,” one netizen commented. Among the 41 destroyed warplanes were
Tu-95, Tu-22M3 used in long-range strikes on Russia. Head of SBU Vasyl Malyuk said the operation Spiderweb was prepared for a year and a half.
